Just dependent on the number of openings, the Knicks have a more noteworthy possibility this season at going after a playoff spot. Furthermore, Tom Thibodeau trusts his club takes advantage of the new format.
The league has received the play-in structure for 2020-21, which implies the Nos. 7-10 seeds in every conference will hold a round-robin competition after the season. One spot is ensured to either the No. 7 or 8 seeds, so it’s actually an opposition between three groups for the last season finisher position.
“I think it makes it interesting,” Thibodeau said. “Obviously where we are, hopefully we’ll have a shot at that. It’s something that we have to work towards.”
The Knicks are again expected to fall into the lottery following a calm free organization season, yet completing in the best 10 is positively simpler than the best 8. The arrangement, which was first utilized over the late spring in the Orlando bubble, is designed for keeping more groups engaged with the season finisher race while discouraging failing. Obviously, the Knicks have been so terrible recently that they haven’t completed in the Eastern Conference’s main 10 since 2014.
So it’ll require improvement from Thibodeau’s crew just to raise into the play-in games.
“For us the important thing is to confront what the facts are. So we have a lot of ground to make up,” Thibodeau said. “We’ve got to work each day to close that gap. if we do that good things will come. There has to be the proper amount of patience, but sometimes too much patience isn’t a good thing. So we’ve got to move this thing along and everything has got to be about the team. Sacrifices have to be made. We have to figure out, develop our plan, and then we’ve got to work our plan.”
Thibodeau experienced something similar to a play-in game in Minnesota more than three years prior, when his crew was attached with Denver heading into its no holds barred matchup in Game 82. The Timberwolves won in OT and the energy gave Adam Silver proof towards receiving this new arrangement.
“I think it has great fan interest,” Thibodeau said. “I think the players are excited about that. So I’m looking forward to that.”
